Clinical and Academic Career Path
Dr. António Lúcio Baptista graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto in 1975, receiving the Boehringer-Ingelheim Prize upon completion of his studies.
After his internships at the Polyclinic and mandatory military service as the head physician of the Artillery Training School, he began his specialization in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Hospital de São João in 1978.
Alongside his medical training, he taught at the Faculty of Medicine of Porto between 1974 and 1980, initially in Bacteriology and later in Surgical Clinic, with a special focus on circulatory diseases.
International Experience
After his initial years of specialization, he developed training and clinical activity at the Teaching Hospitals of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
During this period, he was part of medical-surgical teams in a hospital setting, working in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, operating room, intensive care, and hospital emergency.
He later returned to Portugal to take the specialty exam of the Portuguese Medical Association, obtaining the final classification of:
Very Good with distinction and honors.
After completing his hospital specialization, he returned to South Africa to complete his advanced surgical training.
